This post is purely for my memory's sake.
Ever since our first Valentine's together, Tyler and I decided not to do gifts for each other. On this day we would simply just enjoy the day with one another and devour ourselves in a delicious, romantic meal. So our first Valentine's day Tyler found this super fancy restaurant (we're talking heels and tie requirement) for us to go to. We looked up the menu beforehand to check it out, and yes it was pricey, but since we don't do gifts and we both found something delicious we would enjoy, we thought it would be a fun night to dress up and go out on the town. We get there and it is fancy smancy: white linens, fine china, petals on the table, servers in tux's...you get the picture. To our dismay, they had a special menu for Valentine's day only with crap like duck and alligator AND it was more expensive..like $70 bucks a pop. Now, Tyler and I love to eat good food and I think we would have been willing to pay the price had it not been some foreign crap. I could tell our server began to become annoyed with us as we ordered our water only (that's all we ever order to drink. we are big water people), and slowly looked over the small menu to procrastinate ordering. Every time the server would come to take our order we would pretend to still be reading over the menu so she would give us another minute. I finally told Tyler that I didn't want to be there and spend a good $180 on food I don't even care to eat. So when our server came back to check on us again and we informed her we still need just one more minute, I'm sure you could imagine her frustration. As soon as she turned Tyler looked at me and said, let's make a break for it and we booked it to the exit the second she turned her back. I felt like such a rebel, even though we hadn't ordered any food yet. So now it's 8:00pm on Valentine's day and we still hadn't eaten anything. We finally decided to head to The Cheesecake Factory, a favorite of both of ours, and were so relieved to order some good. We ordered tons of food, not caring at all because we knew that no matter what we got we would still be spending only half the amount we would at the previous restaurant. We ordered a few appetizers, our main meals and dessert for both afterwards and the total came to like $80, the most we have EVER spent out to dinner but we didn't even care because it was still WAY cheaper had we stuck with our original plan. Hey, our server even brought us warm washcloths for our hands afterwards. Now that's classy! Every year we think about how we bailed at the restaurant and we still even want to go back for a lunch date sometime, but just haven't had the chance. Our Valentine's dates have changed quite a bit. Like this years for example: We loaded up, babe and all, tried out a new restaurant called the Blu Burger Grill (which was fantastic. you tell them exactly how you want your burger and they make it for you), came home and ate some treats on the couch while watching The Bachelor (About time Michelle was sent home!), put the babe down and called it a night! Now that's LOVE!
Ha, I'd never heard how you spent your first Valentine's Day- that's hilarious! I love that you just made a break for it when the waiter's back was turned! I think the no gift rule is an excellent one by the way; the best gift is time spent together:)
